Social justice is considered one of the foundational concepts in Islamic thought. Hassan Hanafi, as one of the prominent Arab world thinkers, emphasized the necessity of rethinking to resolve the social problems of contemporary humanity. In this arena, he consistently strived to provide solutions for realizing social justice by offering a new interpretation and modernization of Islamic teachings. This article seeks to answer the following question: What are the theological foundations in Hasan Hanafi’s thought that influence his interpretation of the concept of social justice? Accordingly, the study attempts to pave the way for employing theological discourse (ʿilm al-kalām) in the Islamic interpretation of social justice. One of the most fundamental endeavors Hassan Hanafi pursued in line with his intellectual project is the redefinition of the concepts of Islamic sciences, especially theology, in light of social concepts and issues. The research results indicate that a rereading of Hanafi's thought on justice in light of the framework of theology reveals that justice is not merely an ethical concept but a legal, social, and rational principle for organizing all pillars of society. Furthermore, emphasizing a social reading of the Qur’an and highlighting justice-oriented verses provides a foundation for proposing practical solutions to contemporary social crises. This approach in Islamic social studies outlines a model that can serve as a basis for expanding Islamic justice-oriented research and a criterion for measuring the efficacy of religious sciences in the social context.
