Abstract

Pilgrimage (Ziyārah) has been one of the most significant identity-forming practices for Shi'ism throughout Islamic history. This tradition has served as a point of reference for the general public across all social strata. Female pilgrims constitute a distinct segment of society who, due to their unique biological, psychological, and educational backgrounds, as well as environmental influences, experience pilgrimage in a manner specific to themselves. This research seeks to conduct an ethnographic study of women's pilgrimage, with a specific focus on women pilgrims at the shrine of ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-Ḥasanī (pbuh). To analyze the findings within this lived experience, the theoretical perspectives of Peter Berger—one of the most prominent sociologists of religion in the modern era—have been employed. Concepts such as secularism, diverse forms of consciousness, and the decline and resurgence of religiosity are among the key themes emphasized in Berger's thought. The required data were collected through ethnographic methods, utilizing tools such as observation, participant observation, interviews, documentary analysis, and other relevant techniques. The findings indicate that the lived experience of female pilgrims is shaped within a sacred universe construction at the shrine. Within this experience, life acquires meaning, and through the normalization of everyday affairs, it liberates individuals from the anomie of the pluralized modern world. The prominent presence of feminine emotions and sentiments alongside rationality, biological bodily differences, and the prevailing societal perceptions of gender significantly influence the behavior and actions of female pilgrims at various stages of the pilgrimage ritual. Furthermore, the necessity of greater modesty, the avoidance of displaying outward attractions, the continuity of hope, and the pursuit of material and spiritual needs can be identified as key characteristics of the sacred experience of women at the shrine.
